ARTIST STATEMENT

My art is inspired by the concept of ephemeral beauty, that beauty is relative, and that our perception of beauty is informed by our awareness of darkness and death.  I want to celebrate beauty and appreciate its fleeting nature and I’m constantly aware of the fragility of life and the passing of time.

I strive to create work that captures more than just a moment of beauty that is static or appears to last forever, but rather beauty that is enveloped in the reality that it will soon be gone.  The female subjects in my paintings are vulnerable in their awareness of that reality.

My goal is to create a mood or emotion by using intense color and manipulating the lighting effects.  I am interested in finding a balance between the representational and the abstract.  I want my paintings to remain undefined and work, as Odilon Redon said, “…as music does, in the ambiguous realm of the undetermined”, “to place the visible at the service of the invisible.”
