Todd Stephens’ passion is creating distinctive art pieces for the home and teaching clay art classes at local public schools.
Stephens grew up on an island in Puget Sound, later moving to the mainland, (Bellingham, WA) where he studied Liberal Arts at Western Washington University and abroad at the University of Amsterdam. The result: a profound appreciation of nature, art, and a Washington State teaching certificate.
His interest in ceramics began while working in Mexico. The vivid colors and variety of designs captivated his imagination. When he returned to Bellingham, Todd pursued his dream of trying his hand at clay work. Master potters from New York City,Eugene and Ene Lewis, made his dream a reality by offering an apprenticeship at Indian Street Pottery. There, Todd developed and honed his throwing and hand building techniques. Now, he is member of Cloudy Mountain Pottery
(co-op established in 1976, Maple Falls, WA).
The ceramics Todd creates, often have surface decorations of mountains, leaves, and salmon which reflect his love for the natural environment. Classical art designs, he viewed while visiting Italy and Greece also influence the forms and decoration of Todd’s work.
Stoneware clays, along with the potter’s wheel and hand-building are used to produce the forms. Surface designs and colors are achieved by using in-house glazes (made in small batches from raw materials), by carving into the clay, and with post-firing treatments (for example, horse hair reduction).
Milbrook Clayworks consistently produces outstanding artwork of lasting enjoyment.
