Featured Artists for February 2010

Sandra Smith-Poling and Nancy Rody are the featured artists at Gallery 9 for February. They explore the theme of Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras to provide a delightful break in winter for fun.

Sandra Smith-Poling - Paintings

Sandra’s beautiful “Springtime Galatea” watercolor surrounded by cherry blossoms and “Venetian Masks” for Mardi Gras lend themselves to the romance of February.

Sandra Smith-Poling, is not only a renowned international painter but also a Medical Doctor and newly retired Colonel from the United States Air Force.  Community Service is very important to her as she continues as Medical Director of the EMS (Emergency Medical System) for Jefferson County, West Olympic Peninsula, Olympic National Park and Navy Northwest.

Her retirement from the Air Force has provided a little increase in time to paint and this exhibit will also feature one of her rare oil paintings of Port Townsend, called “Decorating the Palace”.  It was inspired by watching the owner decorate the Palace Hotel for Christmas.

Sandra’s command of watercolor is a joy of light, color and detail.

Add to this the diversity of the paintings from around the globe and the exhibit should not be missed.  More information on Sandra Smith-Poling’s work and her fascinating life can be found on her website www.classicalpaintings.net

Nancy Rody, Glass Artist

"A glass artisan since 1994, Nancy Rody‚s first work was traditional stained glass windows  in residences, lamps, and smaller decorative panels.  More recently, in addition to continuing work with stained glass, she has been exploring metal relief sculpture on glass, glass fusing and abstract glass mosaics built of layers of glass shards.  Metal relief sculpture on glass is made by cutting images out of thin sheets of copper, adhering them to glass, and then dimensionally soldering the image.  Great care is taken not to crack the glass with the hot soldering iron during this process.  The metal is then treated with various patinas to bring out the relief images on the metal.

For February, Nancy offers „zero calorie Valentines‰, original fused glass heart pendants in a variety of colors.  Made of dicrohic glass, these pendants reflect one color while transmitting another.

Nancy retired in Port Townsend in 2003, after a 40 year career in public health. Nancy has lived and worked in Alaska, the Virgin Islands, Hawaii and Micronesia, as well as areas of the US mainland, and has a doctorate in public health. She has had a lifelong interest in art, beginning at age 13 with youth training at the Corcoran Gallery and College of Art and Design in Washington D.C.  Nancy does commissions for custom stained glass windows and panels, and stained glass
restoration and repair."
